Belgium and Ghana: Strengthening Our Economic Partnership through Historic Debt Agreement
The Kingdom of Belgium is proud to announce the formalization of a bilateral debt restructuring agreement with the Republic of Ghana. This landmark accord, signed during the official visit of our Ambassador, H.E. Carole van Eyll, marks a significant milestone in the enduring friendship and economic cooperation between our two nations.
A Commitment to Ghana’s Economic Resilience
As a long-standing partner of Ghana, Belgium is pleased to be the eighth country to conclude a bilateral agreement under the Official Creditor Committee (OCC) framework. This agreement is a testament to Belgium’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s Medium-Term Debt Management Strategy and its journey toward sustainable economic recovery.
During the signing ceremony, H.E. Carole van Eyll reaffirmed Belgium’s confidence in the Ghanaian economy, noting the impressive “economic turnaround” and the fiscal discipline currently being demonstrated by the Ghanaian government.
A Message of Mutual Appreciation
Representing the Government and people of Ghana, the Minister for Finance, Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, expressed profound gratitude to the Kingdom of Belgium. He highlighted that this agreement is a critical pillar in Ghana’s efforts to restore macroeconomic stability and investor confidence.
“We are grateful to the Government of Belgium and H.E. Carole van Eyll for their continued partnership. This agreement helps pave the way for a more resilient Ghana, ensuring we build stronger systems for the future.” — Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson
Looking Forward: Trade, Investment, and Growth
Beyond fiscal agreements, Belgium remains dedicated to fostering a vibrant business environment for our citizens and companies operating in Ghana. With this debt restructuring now finalized, we look forward to:
-
Increased Private Sector Collaboration: Enhancing opportunities for Belgian expertise in logistics, renewable energy, and healthcare.
-
Deepening Diplomatic Ties: Continuing the high-level dialogues that characterize our “South-South” and “North-South” cooperation.
-
Community Engagement: Building on the success of recent events, such as the Belgian community reception at the White Restaurant and Gardens, to ensure our diaspora remains a bridge between our cultures.
