A New Chapter in South-South Cooperation: Launch of the Peru-Ghana Commemorative Book
We are thrilled to celebrate a historic milestone in the burgeoning relationship between the Republic of Peru and the Republic of Ghana. On Thursday, 5th March 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, in partnership with the Embassy of Peru in Accra, officially launched the commemorative book: “Peru–Ghana: A Journey of Friendship and Cooperation.”
This publication, part of Peru’s prestigious “Immortalizing Bilateral Relations” series, is more than just a retrospective; it is a roadmap for a shared future.
Bridging the Atlantic: Key Highlights
The event featured distinguished speakers who reflected on nearly four decades of diplomatic ties (established in 1987) and the deep cultural resonance between our two nations.
-
A Legacy of Global Leadership: Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), Minister for Foreign Affairs, poignantly noted that while separated by the Atlantic, our nations are united by a distinguished diplomatic pedigree. He highlighted the shared legacy of two icons of global peace: Peru’s Javier Pérez de Cuéllar and Ghana’s Kofi Annan, both former UN Secretaries-General.
-
Common Roots & Shared Values: H.E. Rosa Liliana Gómez de Weston, Ambassador of Peru, emphasized that our bond is anchored in similar historical trajectories—from the struggle for independence to the shared heritage of the African diaspora in Peru dating back to the Viceroyalty era.
-
Tangible Partnerships: The book details growing cooperation in trade, education (notably with the University of Ghana’s Spanish Section), tourism, and sustainable mining.
Looking Ahead: Trade & The “Gateway” Strategy
Beyond the pages of history, the launch signaled a pivot toward aggressive economic partnership. The discussions underscored a strategic “Gateway” concept:
| Peru’s Gateway to Asia/South America | Ghana’s Gateway to Africa |
| The newly inaugurated Megaport of Chancay offers Ghana direct access to the Asia-Pacific and South American markets. | As the host of the AfCFTA Secretariat, Ghana serves as the premier entry point for Peruvian businesses into the African continent. |
Key Growth Sectors: Agribusiness (Superfoods like quinoa and chia), sustainable mining, fisheries, and textiles.
The Road to 2027
As we look toward the 40th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations in 2027, this book serves as the foundational text for what is to come. From a proposed commemorative postage stamp to the anticipated visit of the Peruvian Navy training ship B.A.P. Union, the future of Peru-Ghana relations has never looked brighter.
“This publication is not just a reflection on past achievements but a roadmap for future collaboration, encouraging us to translate diplomatic goodwill into tangible economic prosperity.” — Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa
