La Monnaie’s Music Director voted Best Conductor of the Year at the International Opera Awards
Alain Altinoglu, whose tenure at the Royal Opera House la Monnaie has been extended until 2031, was crowned Best Conductor at the International Opera Awards ceremony in Athens.

The “Oscars” of the opera world, the International Opera Awards recognise the best artists and most innovative productions that have graced the international stage over the past year.
The 2025 winners included conductor Alain Altinoglu, Music Director of La Monnaie since 2016, whose tenure has just been extended until 2031.
Newly appointed General Director of the Royal Opera House la Monnaie, Christina Scheppelmann, was delighted with this outstanding endorsement. “This award is a wonderful crowning achievement for the many artistic successes and musical highlights that Alain Altinoglu has realised over the past year, both within our opera house and beyond. We think first and foremost of the Ring cycle and our season opener Falstaff, but also of the various concerts that were invariably received with great enthusiasm by the audience,” she emphasised in a press release. She also praised Alain Altinoglu’s “exceptional musical gifts” and “enduring enthusiasm“.
In recent years, La Monnaie or one of its members has always been recognised by an International Opera Award. In 2023, the Royal Opera House was honoured for its work and social commitment, and in 2024, bass-baritone José van Dam(This hyperlink opens a new window) received a Lifetime Achievement Award. Earlier in 2025, this venerable Brussels theatre was also named the 2024 OPER! Awards(This hyperlink opens a new window) “Best Opera House of the Year”.
With over five centuries of history behind it, the Royal Opera House la Monnaie continues to dazzle with its artistic creations, making it one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses.
