Belgium secures five podiums at the European swimming championships

Belgium’s swimmers won four silver and one bronze medal at the European Short Course Swimming Championships.

This year, the 27th edition of the championships, was particularly kind to Belgium’s swimmers – both in the men’s and especially the women’s categories. In the short course competition held in Lublin, Poland, the Belgian athletes managed to equal the nation’s medal-winning record of 2015.

In the women’s category, 20-year-old Roos Vanotterdijk won two silver medals in the 100 m medley, setting a new Belgian record (56.80), and in the 50 m butterfly, again with a new national record (24.84). The swimmer from Bree (province of Limburg) would no doubt have claimed even more podium finishes if a minor illness hadn’t forced her to cut short her participation in the championships.

Florine Gaspard was also crowned in silver for the 100 m breaststroke and in bronze for the 50 m breaststroke. The 23-year-old swimmer from Bastogne has been enjoying the best season of her career since she started training with Mark Faber in Antwerp.

On the men’s side, Lucas Henveaux won silver in the 800 m freestyle, but unfortunately couldn’t make it on to the podium in the 400 m medley final. But the 25-year-old from Liège can nevertheless be proud of his achievements, also setting a new national record.

Congratulations to the Belgian delegation for these fine performances at the Europeans!
